Using selfies to measure body fat %
🧠 Plus: The power of curiosity, the psychology of food colours, and being an anomaly.
Hey — It’s Dean.
Welcome to the 130th consecutive edition of the PWL newsletter.
It’s also the 1325th day in a row I have shown up to do my 10 essential habits.
Here are some awesome things I uncovered this week to help you on your weight loss journey.
[1] A difficult question I am wrestling with.
Will my habits endure when I am experiencing grief?
Honestly, I have no idea, but here is my working theory.
I believe my habits — what I do everyday — are the key to navigating grief better because I will continue to do things that will enhance my physical, mental and emotional health.
By continuing to work on eating right, sleeping right, thinking right and moving right I will give myself the best opportunity to experience grief without being crushed by it when I eventually come out the other side.
[2] Leverage the psychology of food colours.
Here is something interesting I have discovered that sparks tremendous joy when it comes to the meals I create for myself.
The more vibrant and contrasting the colours on the plate, the more amazing my meals look.
And the more amazing they look, the better they taste and the more joy they spark.
Suggestion → Use ivory plates to get best results, as they allow the colors to really pop.
[3] Why I choose to be an anomaly and you should too.
Here’s an alarming stat Malcolm Gladwell shared in a recent podcast interview.
“99% of middle-aged adults do not practice healthy habits.”
That means I am in the 1% that does and that makes me an anomaly.
But what’s interesting is from age 50 to 53 I was part of the herd — the 99%.
I’m on a mission to show that it is never too late or too hard to become an anomaly
You just need to look for opportunities to do things the other 99% won’t.
Here’s an example.
The other day I got off the subway and had a choice. I could take the escalator like the other 99%…
OR
I could be part of the 1% and take the stairs two at a time with the 50lb pack I was wearing because I had just come from Costco where I bought my food for the week.
I chose to be an anomaly.
Takeaway → It’s not hard to be an anomaly. Simply watch what the herd is doing and do the opposite. You will be amazed where it can take you.
[4] A framework to steal.
Neutral thinking framework.
There are 3 options we can choose when we step on a scale.
When our weight goes up, we can choose to experience some level of devastation.
When it goes down, we can choose to experience some level of elation.
But neither of those states is a healthy place to be.
Where we want to get to is the middle where we experience neutral thinking. In this state, we choose not to react positively or negatively to the weight we see.
And the secret ingredient to becoming a neutral thinker is to shift, as quickly as one can, to being curious.
When we are in a state of curiosity, we start to ask questions like…
Were there any obvious mistakes or successes that led to this result?
How can I get less of the mistakes or more of the successes?
What skills must I adopt to limit those mistakes or continue to develop to ensure more success?
Takeaway → Curiosity may kill cats, but when it comes to people and successful weight loss that lasts, it’s a life saver.
[5] An app I am super excited about.
Spren — Track your Body Fat % with a single selfie. —> Click here to Join Wait List.
Here are a few benefits to this app.
You can calculate and ultimately reduce your body fat % with the accuracy of a Dexa Scan.
Small changes in lean mass are difficult to see with the human eye—detect these changes effortlessly and track progress over time.
Use evidence-based machine learning algorithms, to measure small changes in body composition—empowering your quest to slow aging.
Takeaway → Invest in tools that allow you to measure what matter mosts so you can achieve what matters most.
That is all for today.
See you next Sunday my friend.
And hey — keep being awesome.
