The psychology of great sleep.
๐ Plus: Steph Curry's Irrational confidence, Bryce Dallas Howard on enduring 48 failed auditions & 3 words to inspire humanity.
Hey โ Itโs Dean.
Welcome to the 139th consecutive edition of the newsletter.
Each week I share game-changing mindsets from remarkable people doing extraordinary things.
Here are the five I uncovered this week.
Please steal shamelessly.

Before you dig into todayโs newsletter, I have a challenge for you. I will share the solution below. You in? Hereโs the challenge.
1/ A mindset about sleep.
Some context.
I heard this quote while listening to Chris onย The Growth Guide Podcast. Chris is a neurologist, sleep specialist, peak performance coach and author.
Why this matters.
There is a psychology behind everything. What we think or feel about anything is far more powerful than what might actually be true. Itโs why the placebo effect works.ย
๐ง
Mindset worth stealing: What we think is true is more powerful than what actually is.
2/ How Bryce Dallas Howard endured 48 failed auditions before landing her first gig.
Some context.
I made this clip for myself after listening to Bryce being interviewedย here. She shared the advice her grandmother gave her (also an actor) on how many auditions it takes before an actor gets their first gig. On average, itโs about 64. Understanding the math created a mindset for Bryce that allowed her to endure 48 failed auditions.ย
Why this matters.
As a species, we are not built for failure. Worse, we are not taught the skill to navigate it when it does occur. Knowing the math behind our eventual success can help us endure the inevitabilities of multiple failures.ย
๐ง
Mindset worth stealing: Failure can't endure a really long runway for success.
3/ A mindset from NBA Great Steph Curry.
Some context.
This comes from a recent article I read onย ESPNย about basketball great Steph Curry, who plays for the Golden State Warriors. Curry was asked where the confidence comes to play the way he plays. His response was legendary โย Irrational Confidence!ย
Why this matters.
People who achieve great things develop irrational confidence. Martin Luther King did. Oprah did. Seinfeld did. And it starts with this mindsetโฆ
๐ง
Mindset worth stealing: Go all-in on what you believe to be true.
4/ Inspiring humanity.
If you only had 3 words to put on a bracelet to inspire humanity, what would they be?
Some context.
I got this idea while doing my research on Matthew McConaughey. His organization sells a bracelet with these 3 words. Thatโs their core philosophy they teach.
Why this matters.
Trying to distill everything you know into 3 words is HARD. But the exercise itself is incredibly valuable because it forces you to think about the one thing that drives everything you do. This mindset you adopt is the root cause of who you are and why you do what you do.
My take.
I love this exercise. Getting clear on the one thing that drives all things is profound. As a mindset guy, I know everything starts with how I think. When I change my thoughts I change my life. So my 3 words would beโฆ
๐ง
Mindset worth stealing: Thoughts become things.
5/ A bias to add.
This relates to the challenge above. There are two solutions to solve that problem.
You can add squares.
Or you can subtract squares.
Some context.
Thisย studyย found that when solving problems, we default to addition, seldom, if ever considering if a problem can be solved using subtraction.
How about you? Did you default to addition?
As a weight loss guy, I see this bias a lot. The first thing people do to lose weight is add things like a gym membership, a new complex way of eating and a bunch of expensive and unnecessary supplements.
Sadly, few start with subtraction. So the next time you look to solve a problem consider this mindsetโฆ
๐ง
Mindset worth stealing: Before you add look to subtract.
That is all for today.
See you next Sunday my friend.
And hey โ keep being awesome.
