How Steve Jobs dealt with fear of failure
π Plus mindsets from Rolex, Aristotle, & Kobe Bryant.
Hey β Itβs Dean.
Welcome to the 136th consecutive edition of the newsletter.
Apologies for the late delivery.
I made the decision to remove caffeine from my diet today to see if it will help with my restless leg syndrome.
And alas, I have had a pounding headache all day as a result. DOH!
But I did manage to muster up the focus to share a few mindsets I uncovered this past week that had a profound impact on my thinking, my habits and my results.
Steal shamelessly so they can do the same for you.
1/ An Aristotle Mindset.
βWe are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.β
~Aristotle
I took this to heart when I was trying to figure out how to lose the extra 40lbs I was carrying in 2019 when I was 53 years old.
But I tweaked it specifically for me. My mantra wasβ¦
βI become what I do everyday.β
This new mindset inspired, what ultimately became, the 10 essential habits I perform every single day to build and sustain a highly successful body.
People think success is complicated.
Itβs not.
In any area of life there are only a few essential habits that drive the bulk of success.
Our job is to uncover what those are and then shrink them down to a point where they can be done every single day.
And when you do them day in and day out you set the stage for remarkable things to happen.
*****
Mindset to adopt β I become what I do everyday.
2/ An Andrew Huberman Mindset.
Andrew is a neuroscientist who has taken the internet by storm with his science based insights.
The other day he posted this on Instagram.
His caption made reference to one of AESOPβs fables, βThe tortoise and the hare.β
I have applied that fableβs lessons to my weight loss journey.
I made a decision early on that I would play the long game.
I would lose weight slowly and deliberately by doing my daily essential habits.
By slowing down, focusing only on today and doing less longer I created remarkable results more quickly and have sustained them much longer β today is day 1367.
What area of your life could you transform if you took the βdo less longerβ approach?
*****
Mindset to adopt β Make haste slowly.
3/ A Kobe Bryant Mindset .
Iβm presently reading Kobeβs book, βThe Mamba Mentality: How I play.β
There are a number of great mindsets I have captured. Hereβs one of my favouritesβ¦
I love the line, βIβm going to figure you out.β
We can apply that mindset to any obstacle that stands in our way.
I said the same thing to my body when I got serious about losing weight for good.
βIβm going to figure you out.β
And I ultimately did because I was determined to stop having my body determine how I live my life.
Whatβs an obstacle thatβs presently in your way that you need to figure out?
*****
Mindset to adopt β Everything and everyone is figure-out-able.
4/ A Steve Jobs Mindset.
This was Steve Jobs discussing that dark period of his life when he was ousted from Apple.
I love the phrase βCoach myself on not being afraid to fail.β
There is this false belief that highly successful people are fearless.
They are not.
What I do think they possess are skills and self-talk to coach themselves through difficult times so they can achieve the success they desire.
Itβs a skill we should all learn how to master.
*****
Mindset to adopt β Coach yourself.
5/ A Rolex Mindset.
A newsletter I subscribe to is βThe Psychology of Marketing.β
I captured this gem from their latest edition.
That is fascinating no? π²
And here is my diabolical insight. πΏ
Use that psychological ploy to influence others (for good not evil) and myself.
Perhaps a smiley face in an email subject line or at the end of an email might increase positive emotions to influence an outcome I am looking to secure.
And a smiley face on my mirror or to start off a journal energy theoretically should positively influence my mood.
Itβs an interesting tactic worth exploring to help us get more of what we want in life β in a good way β and discourage what we donβt want.
*****
Mindset to adopt β Use positive psychology to skew positive outcomes in our favour.
That is all for today.
See you next Sunday my friend.
And hey β keep being awesome.
