Welcome to the 166th consecutive edition of the newsletter.
I have been thinking about the art of self-improvement a lot of late.
It’s not something we are taught. It’s definitely not something we are good at.
But we can be — if we begin to teach ourselves how to get really good at getting better.
That’s the theme of this week’s newsletter.
Enjoy.
1/ Focus on the vital few.
Self-improvement works like that ad. It’s about seeing everything you could be doing, and choosing the vital few you should be doing.
2/ Note-taking for podcasts (iPhone only)
One of the reasons I don’t like listening to podcasts or audiobooks is I don’t have an easy way to take notes.
You might already do this, but I just learned this tip a few days ago — and quite frankly it’s so obvious I laughed out loud at myself for not coming up with this idea on my own.
Here’s what I do…
When I hear something I want to remember, I pause at that point in the podcast and take a screenshot
I then click on the image and
click EDIT
Tap the pencil icon
and use my finger to write down the key idea I want to remember
Note taking is a big part of self-improvement. I now have a better way to capture key insights on podcasts. Hopefully, you do too.
3/ Investing for the long-term.
Here’s a key principle for self-improvement.
We should have ZERO interest in anything that does not have the potential to scale long-term.
4/ The power of the right mindset.
This is a tagline from a company that makes door handles.
That is marketing at it’s finest.
By connecting door handles to handshakes — something we can all relate to — it creates a new empowering way to think about them.
That’s what great mindsets do. They create a profound change in how we think about something, which then changes how we behave and that changes the outcomes we produce.
My point here is that you and I can model that marketing above to create new mindsets to change ourselves.
5/ An exercise to spark joy.
Here is something to try for the next 7 days.
Each morning, record 3 things that you believe will spark joy that day.
Each evening, record 3 things that did spark joy.
Record any observations you have about…
your mood
your energy
your sleep
your productivity
unexpected joy
I’m suggesting this because we live in a world that bombards us with negativity. Self-improvers realize this and are proactive in their efforts to train their brain to seek out those things that spark joy.
That’s it for today. 🙏 Thanks for reading.
Keep being awesome my friend.
