Welcome to the 167th consecutive edition of the newsletter.
Last newsletter I mentioned I have been thinking a lot about self-improvement.
The older I get, the more important the topic is becoming for me.
So much of aging is about decline. But it makes me think about wine. It improves with age. Why can’t you and I do the same?
That’s my focus with this newsletter moving forward.
Here are this week’s five insights about self-improvement that you can apply to any area of your life.
Enjoy.
1/ One reason success is hard…
Is because successful people make it look easy.
And that’s a problem because we then create unrealistic expectations for our success.
What we think might take weeks or months, could be a year or years in the making.
It’s why so many people quit their weight loss journey after a few weeks.
They grossly underestimated their timeline for success.
To rethink → Success will take 5X to 10X longer than you think.
2/ The Duracell Mindset…
Protecting your energy should be at the top of tour “To do” list — EVERYDAY!
I find it helpful to think of myself as a battery.
The more energy I have, the greater my odds of winning at my life.
So I focus on what SAPS me and what ZAPS me.
To try → Over the next week, create two lists — SAPS and ZAPS. Study your list so you can negate the SAPS while cultivating the ZAPS.
3/ Best story wins…
I love this Warren Buffett story. And while it’s within the context of investing, the principle applies to self-improvement….
Mindset to adopt → Sweat the small stuff so there is no big stuff.
4/ Build a case…
At the end of any article you read on the The Guardian — a UK newspaper —you will see this…
They state 3 strong reasons why you might want to consider supporting them.
What they are doing — very well I might add — is building a case.
This is an excellent strategy we can steal and apply to our self-improvement journey.
Using facts, we can build compelling cases FOR habits we are looking to adopt or AGAINST habits we are looking to stop.
The goal is to build a case so compelling that it inspires the actions we desire.
To try → Pick a habit you want to stop. Come up with 3 to 5 points to build a compelling case against it.
5/ Book recommendation.
I’m going to start compiling a list of the best self-improvement books I have read.
But I thought I would share the one I just bought that I think is going to be amazing.
To read → Hidden Potential by Adam Grant
That’s it for today. 🙏 Thanks for reading.
